Spring Semester, 2022.
Community-Word Project Teaching Artists Mayele Alognon and Libby Mislan worked with 6th and 8th grade students at J.H.S. 98 Herman Ridder School in the Bronx.
Community-Word Project students, during their thirteen weeks together, explored the following questions. “What does home mean to us?” “ What physical objects, smells, tastes, sounds, or images remind us of home?” “How can we celebrate our memories by expressing them through writing and art?”
Students wrote “Where I’m From” poems and created collage self-portraits to accompany their poems.

Students also wrote ode poems, inspired by Pablo Neruda’s “Ode to Things”, and created gifs, illustrating their chosen ode items.

Finally, with the goal of making digital art more accessible and fun, students created a final video presentation documenting the student’s work throughout the residency. Click below to watch the video.
