Kayla Dike was a Community-Word Project student throughout high school at The Young Women’s Leadership School in Jamaica, Queens. She has a powerful, authentic voice and true leadership qualities which she gained through Community-Word Project programs in classroom residencies and CWP2.0. Kayla graduated in the Spring of 2021.

We recently got in touch with Kyla to see how she is doing in college: “I am now a freshman at SUNY Purchase College and I’m studying Studio Production! Since graduation I’ve been doing absolutely fantastic. I thought after four years of being in the same school and two years of a pandemic it would be hard to foster relationships, but I’m glad to say that was not the case.”

Quote: Silence is no longer my story, no longer my sentence. Heard is my sentence and poetry, she freed me for the rest of my days.

“Community-Word Project has played a huge roll in my being able to speak up and participate in public speeches. In college I’ve realized there are so many more chances to stand up for what you believe in. And after four years of working with Community-Word Project Teaching Artists and Board Members, it is now second nature to me.”
