Katie Cox, Musician
Katie Cox grew up spending summers fishing, camping, hiking, and playing the flute around the state of Alaska. Originally from Fairbanks, she currently resides in Brooklyn and is a flutist specializing in contemporary and classical music. She is a Co-founder and the Executive Director of a New Music festival in Homer, Alaska called Wild Shore Festival New Music. She is also the principal flutist of the Brooklyn Wind Symphony, and a member of the contemporary ensemble Hotel Elefant which TimeOut New York described as “one of New York’s fastest rising new-music outfits.” As an active chamber musician in New York City, Katie has worked with esteemed ensembles such as TRANSIT, Redshift, Ensemble Moto Perpetuo, Concert Black, Contemporaneous, and International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). She has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in New York City such as the Roulette Theater, (Le) Poisson Rouge, BRIC Arts Media House, Galapagos Arts Space, Brookfield Place, Winter Garden for the Bang on a Can Marathon, Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall for the Weill Institute of Music, and most recently Lincoln Center’s Out of Doors premiering 2014 Pulitzer Prize winner John Luther Adam’s “Sila: Breath of the World.” This August, she will be presenting and performing with three-time Grammy-winning ensemble eighth blackbird at Wild Shore New Music.
Before moving to New York to advance her musical career, Katie was a finalist in the Plowman Chamber Music Competition, MTNA Soloist Competition, several National Flute Association Competitions, and winner of the 2011 Beverly Hills Chamber Music Audition. She performed in the National Flute Association Professional Flute Choir, Fargo/Moorhead Opera Company, The Beverly Hills Chamber Music Festival, University of Nebraska’s Chamber Music Institute, The Fairbanks Flutists, and the Fairbanks Summer Fine Arts Festival. She has played in the masterclasses of Jeanne Baxstresser, Alexis Stills, Robert Langevin, Heather Clark, Carol Wincenc, and William Bennett. Katie also taught flute in several music schools and California school districts in Los Angeles and Orange County and was on the faculty at Bethesda University in Anaheim as well as Amuse Music Center in Rolling Hills Estates.
Katie received her Bachelors of Music degree at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN studying under Deborah Harris and earned her Masters of Music Degree at the Bob Cole Conservatory at California State University, Long Beach under the tutelage of John Barcellona. Other primary teachers in her studies include Dorli McWayne and Rena Urso-Trapani.
TATIP Work
Katie is currently in the Teaching Artist Training & Internship Program (TATIP) at Community-Word Project working with Katie Issel Pitre and Max Allbee at PS 316 in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. She also participated in the Community-Word Project Summer Institute in July of 2015. Katie is excited to share her knowledge and passion of contemporary music with children across New York City.
