Xiaolin Li is a visual artist. She joined Community-Word Project in the fall of 2017 as a trainee in the Teaching Artist Project (TAP). She is currently completing her BA in Childhood Education and English at Hunter College. She creates Japanese influenced anime/ manga art using a variety of mediums, such as Copic markers, watercolors, oil paints, acrylic paints, color pencils, graphite pencils, and digitally by means of photoshop, SAI, etc. She is a first-generation Chinese immigrant who moved to Brooklyn, New York at age seven. She is fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin, Taishanese, and English. In 2014, she began to work as a private art tutor for a student with autism. Since then she continued to work with students that are differently abled as a community habilitation worker at CARES.
Xiaolin interned at PS 316 with Mary Cinadr and Shawn Ferreyra to work on a community poem. Xiaolin interned at PS 84 with Felipe Galindo to work on a community mural.
Most Memorable TAP Moment:
“To talk about social justice is to be uncomfortable and to be out of one’s comfort zone but it is very important to keep bringing up these topics because that’s the only way to change the social construct that place stigmas on people who are different from what the “norm” is. I am not very confident with myself when I’m with people that I don’t know, even so, I want to continue to try to talk to more people because TAP has created a safe space for me to explore and the program enable me to talk to many inspiring people.TAP has empower me to speak out and to keep refining myself. I learn something new after every class/ seminar, and I’m always looking forward to what I can learn next. I’m really happy that I have joined the TAP family.”
