Starry Starry Night for
an Art Salon
Artist salons are built into the Teaching Artist Project’s Signature Program as an opportunity for art-making and community building outside of our core workshops. Salons are a chance for trainees to get to know each other as artists, and they put into practice TAP’s experiential learning philosophy–that in order for us to build a creative community among our students, we need to experience what that looks and feels like for ourselves.
We kicked off our first salon of the year at Starr Bar in Bushwick, Brooklyn, a venue that supports social-justice focused events. We invited our alumni as well as current trainees, to provide an opportunity for past and present participants to connect.
We were especially excited to be joined by a 2010 TAP alumni and long-time CWP teaching artist, Felipe Galindo. Felipe, an illustrator and political cartoonist, kicked off the art share portion of the evening by sharing his recent political cartoon work featured in the French Bastille Magazine, and connecting it to recent US elections.
The art share also included music and poetry performances by co-directors Dale Novella and Jay Howard, and coordinator Libby Mislan. Several trainees also shared work, including a solo violin performance from TAP trainee Bella Hubbard, a poem from Tori Hanna, and an original song from Michele Brisco.
The evening definitely fulfilled its intended purpose as a space for TAP trainees and alumni to develop meaningful connections, in particular through sharing their creative work.
Here, Dale shows off fresh TAP merch, a black-out-poem-inspired design by Adriana Guzman, highlighting our foundational values: Power of Voice, Inclusivity and Accessibility, Creative Expression, Radical Love, and Intentional Collaboration.
