An immigrant from the Dominican Republic, Clevis grew up in NYC. She attended NYC public schools from 6th grade through HS (started in the Bronx then moved to Harlem, NYC). She attended undergrad at Skidmore College in upstate NY and then graduate school at NYU. Cleyvis learned of Community Word through outreach that Executive Director Michele Kotler did while she was at NYU pursuing an MFA. So touched by Michele's call to action, Cleyvis became a Teaching Artist during her second year at NYU. "I love the mission of the organization and now that I myself have kids, who go to school in the suburbs (I live in Montclair, NJ) I've come to understand and appreciate how critical the work of Community Word Project is for kids who grew up just like me." Clevis has worked in an Insurance Company for the better part of twenty years. Currently she is also working on the manuscript of a novel and has slowly begun the work of reconnecting to her old writing community. "I still have dreams of eventually making a living from my writing so I plug away a little bit at a time to make it happen. For fun, I like to read everything I can get my hands on and I love to run half marathons and take my kids (a four year old and a six year old) on adventures all over NYC."
